Red Velvet Cake

Ingredients

  • Servings: 8
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon butter flavoring
  • 1 1/2 ounces red food coloring
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 (3 ounce) boxes cream cheese, softened
  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups sifted powdered sugar

Recipe

  • 1 cream shortening, sugar, eggs, and flavors.
  • 2 make a paste of cocoa and food coloring.
  • 3 add to first mixture.
  • 4 alternately add flour and buttermilk.
  • 5 mix baking soda and vinegar in small bowl; add to batter., blend.
  • 6 bake in three 9" or 10" pans for 20 - 25 minutes at 350â°.

  • 9 cover the cake with the frosting.
